CONFERENCE PROGRAMME

This Conference will celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the establishment of the AIJA. The particular focus of the conference will be on the development and refinement of potential research topics consistent with the AIJA Council's concern to emphasise the importance of the Institute's research program in the administration of justice.

Keynote Address: ‘United Nations Human Rights Treaties’ Speaker: Her Excellency, The Rt Hon Dame Silvia Cartwright DBE, Governor-General of New Zealand.

Her Excellency was, until her recent appointment as Governor-General, a judge of the High Court of New Zealand and has a long involvement with the United Nations Committee for the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination Against Women.

SESSION TWO

Interpreters for Indigenous People Before the Courts
Speakers: Dr Michael Cooke, Australian National University and Ms Barbara Weis, Northern Territory Interpreting Service.
Convenor: Her Hon Judge Mary Ann Yeats, District Court of Western Australia.

 

The AIJA Project and Research and Indigenous Cultural Awareness Committees have identified this area for future research. Dr Cooke has published his doctoral thesis on this topic and Ms Weis heads the recently-established Northern Territory Interpreting Service.The question of interpreters and, in particular, interpreters for indigenous people, provides challenges for judicial administration which the Institute wishes to address.

Evaluation of New Case Processing Regimes in District Court of NSW and County Court of Victoria.

Speaker: Dr Ann Eyland, Justice Research Centre, Law and Justice Foundation, NSW . Powerpoint.

 

Convenor: Professor Greg Reinhardt, Executive Director, AIJA

The AIJA Project and Research Committee has under consideration a proposal for research on the evaluation of case management. The Committee has been keen to consider the important work conducted by the Justice Research Centre in this area to assist in identifying directions for that research. This session will report on the success of efforts by two courts to reduce costs and delay in civil litigation.

The Effect of External Review Decisions on the Bureaucratic Process
Speakers: Ms Robin Creyke, Reader in Law, Center for International and Public Law, Faculty of Law, Australian National University.

Convenor: The Hon Justice Robert Nicholson, Federal Court of Australia.

 

The AIJA Project and Research Committee has had under discussion a possible research project on the effect of tribunal decisions on bureaucratic processes. The Committee has considered the work conducted to date at the Australian National University and suggested that a presentation of that research might widen the debate on this important question.

Speaker: Professor Michael Chesterman, Faculty of Law, University of New South Wales. Powerpoint. Commentator: Justice Peter Evans, Supreme Court of Tasmania, Justice Phil ip Cummins, Supreme Court of Victoria. and His Hon Judge Michael Strong, County Court of Victoria.

 

Convenor: Ms Prue Innes, Courts Information Officer, Supreme Court of Victoria.

Professor Chesterman, one of the authors of the recent report on Managing Prejudicial Publicity by the Justice Research Centre in New South Wales, will speak on that research and other current issues in the law of contempt. A commentary from the judicial and prosecution perspectives will be provided.
