Session One: Strategic Directions for Libraries

There have been enormous changes in the scope and role of court libraries and librarians in recent years. The impact of technology, resource constraints and the introduction of business planning into the court environment have all been forces for change. This session is designed to assist those involved in strategic planning exercises within libraries in task of identifying future directions, defining and marketing library services and ensuring adequate recognition and feedback for the important contribution that libraries make to the operation of our court and tribunal systems. Our guest speaker, Brenda McConchie, is an experienced management consultant with extensive experience of strategic planning in relation to library systems.

Session Two: Current Awareness Services

Panel members: Panel Session. Jacqui Elliott, Court Librarian, High Court of Australia, Kate Curr, Manager, Library Systems, NSW Parliamentary Library, Sue Scott, Director, On-line Legal Access Project, Law Foundation of New South Wales (further panelists to be advised).

A discussion session looking at:

  • types of services provided,
  • different products - including the use of new technologies;
  • maintaining legal links and hot topics for court staff and incorporating these services into current awareness and promotional material; and
  • possibilities to avoid duplication and share information

Session Three: The Virtual Court Library - An up-date from New Zealand. (Convenor: Lesley O’Loughlin, Librarian-in-Charge, Law Courts Library, Sydney)

Session Four: Mastering Metadata, Document markup and Legal XML, Convenor: Robert Elson, Deputy Librarian, Supreme Court of South Australia

Speakers: Allison Stanfield, Director E-Law Australia AND Sue Scott, Director, On-line Legal Access Project, Law Foundation of New South Wales

The development of legal mark-up language will have a considerable impact on the process of legal research and documentation in coming years. This session is designed to provide an introduction to some of the concepts and issues.

Session Five: Judicial Training (Convenor: Sue Lynch, Manager Family Law Information Service, Northern Area Office, Family Court of Australia)

Panel members: Jane Pritchard, Systems Manager Law Courts Library, Nicola Sanderson, Records Manager Federal Court Library, Sydney, Warwick Soden, Registrar of the Federal Court of Australia, representative from Judicial Commission of NSW.

Court libraries are playing an increasing role, not only in providing training for judicial officers in legal research techniques, but also in developing training packages and 'train the trainer' programs. This session will enable courts to exchange information on the work that is being done in this area in different jurisdictions and benefit from the exchange of ideas.
